Should You Leave the Toilet Lid Up or Down?

To some, it always seems like the right thing to do to put down the seat and close the lid. Why? Because there is a lid—if it's there, why not use it? But some do not think this way. They either don't see the toilet lid, or they view it as a backrest.

Which makes me wonder: Do people really recline on the toilet as if settling into their La-Z-boy before a TV show?

The question of whether to shut the toilet lid or not has been a point of contention for some time.

This article seeks to make the case that the lid of the toilet should always be put down after use. Here are six reasons why:

1. Bacteria-Filled Mist
2. Child Safety
3. Pet Safety
4. The Lid Is Not a Backrest
5. Feng Shui
6. Falling in

1. Bacteria-Filled Mist

When you flush the toilet, a bacterial mist of aerosolized fecal waste is created. Studies have shown that the mist can travel several feet every time you flush, meaning any toothbrushes, towels, shower curtains, or surfaces in the vicinity are being blanketed in bacteria. You, too, are probably receiving a blow of gaseous bacteria to the face.

2. Child Safety

Toilet locks exist so that children cannot open the toilet. Unfortunately, there are still cases of children falling into the toilet. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a toddler or baby can topple into an open toilet headfirst and drown. Frankly, with children in the house, there should be child-safety locks on the bathroom doors. Protect small children. Close the lid.

3. Pet Safety

Pets love toilets—that cool, fresh water, the funky smell, the mystery of what lies beyond the rim of that porcelain bowl. These are the things pets' dreams are made of. Dogs often hydrate themselves in the toilet bowl, and my cat makes attempts to play in the water.

If you leave the lid up, your pet may consume bacteria-ridden water or residual cleaning products. As you might imagine, the Animal Poison Control Center advises caution in terms of allowing your pet to consume toilet water.

4. The Lid Is Not a Backrest

The toilet lid is there for one reason and one reason only: closing the toilet. If people actually do recline on the toilet, they should know it's extremely unhealthy. Let's consider a pickle jar for a moment: You open the jar, you take out the pickle, you close the jar, then you put the lid back on the jar. Lids close things. They aren't decorative accessories.

5. Feng Shui

Feng shui, pronounced "fung shway," literally translates to wind, water. Also known as geomancy, it is an ancient Chinese science based on natural energy, or chi, in our environment. The Queen of feng shui is Lillian Too. She often writes about the power of water and how to use it effectively.

Lillian Too says toilets should always be closed because water has drawing power. You don't want to draw the energy in your home down the toilet. The open toilet will also draw your wealth down the toilet, says she. Need I say more?

6. Falling In

This reason to put the lid down also applies to leaving the seat up. Falling in is one of the greatest reasons to put down the lid. If you have ever fallen in the toilet, you know it can be a painful and messy affair. There is simply no way anyone can fall in the toilet if the lid is down.

We have gone bacteria crazy. How much bacteria can possibly be vaporized AND distributed so far from the toilet? You probably have 1000's more bacteria under you finger nails than what is vaporized in one flush. Yeah is looks more proper, bur practicality should generally prevail.

This has become quite the family debate! My daughter and her family put the lid down after using the toilet. I have NEVER put the lid down. When they were visiting, I woke during the night and went to the bathroom where I promptly peed all over the lid, the floor and myself!! Wow! You've gotten a lot of comments on this. Who knew a toilet lid could be so interesting. Yet it is! This is such a well written piece. I'm glad you mentioned the leaning back thing. I don't think I do it, but just in case, now I am more aware. Another thing I like to do is wipe the toilet rims and lid and the part behind the lid pretty regularly with a cleanser that has bleach in it. Often times, we forget to wipe the handles (any handles) so that is a useful tip. Hmm. come to think of it, I think I'd better go wipe my toilet and door handles right now!

Sigh! Let me add one more reason for putting down the toilet lid. I was cleaning the bathroom with the lid up, using a toothbrush to scrub around the faucet and yes, the toothbrush fell in the toilet. It was like a magnet the way it jumped out of my hand and down the bowl. Then the toilet started backing up. I had to get in a plumber yesterday but it is still running slowly. All this because I dared to clean while the toilet lid was up. Never again!

The bacteria factor alone was enough for me! I can hardly stand the thought of it and since I can't control what other people do in my bathroom I leave my toothbrush closed up in the cabinet high up! Closing the lid is obviously the best, there is unfortunately one problem and that is that it can be a problem for old and sick people. When my sister in law was dying of cancer she asked us not to do it because simply the time it took her to close the lid was the reason she did not "make" it and then the result is whet jammies!

Very interesting-- I was always taught to put the toilet seat down for ladies but never taught to put the lid down. I was born and raised and still reside in Southern California no more than a few miles from the coast. We leave the lid up so the inside of the toilet doesn't get moldy.

Immunity perspective:-

I have never heard of anyone getting sick because of a dirty toilet in the modern developed world. I expect there are people who get sick from a clean toilet because they have not built up a natural immunity.

If there are people in the household who prefer the seat down then their wishes should be respected. But remember, to lift the seat one must put their fingers between the seat and the rim of the toilet, effectively putting their fingies right in the dried urine on the rim.

If they want the lid down then I think it could only be for aesthetic reasons, or you have toddlers, or inquisitive pets. I think the "mist" theory is a bit fetched, however, just like the seat, if there is someone on the household who prefers the lid left down, then it is easy enough to respect the wish.

I hope my comments do not offend the excellent author, but rather they are intended to bring to the forefront the natural immunity perspective.

Put down the seat and lid after each use :), it looks heaps better.

I am sorry but I think the only good reasons to do so are the pets and the children safety. being that i don't have any pets or children, I feel that men leaving the seat up is the fairest way to go about it. It evenly distributes the minor work of moving the toilet seat. I don't believe in feng shui, the mist has not made me or anyone I live with sick yet, and grown women should really be conscious of where they are sitting so they don't fall in a toilet. by leaving the seat up I make the sitting surface much cleaner because i know that many men pee with the seat down and get sprinkles on there... gross.

It is only in the past couple of years that a friend brought to my attention that flushing a toilet with the lid up will result in a bacteria filled mist leaving the toilet bowl. I have since removed my toothbrush from the bathroom and always put the lid down. I've tried to instil this into the rest of the family too, although that's not so easy. I think I will have to show them your hub!!

I like the sound of a toilet seat that closes itself, a conversation starter for sure!!

Lid down, there should be no ifs or buts about it. But unfortunatly I keep arguing with our roommates about this issue. We have 2 bathrooms and my boyfriend and I keep the lid closed and the bathroom door shut, now we have 3 male roommates who think it is much better to leave the seat and lid up plus leaving the bathroom door open is also cool..... apart from having had 2 cats fly into the open toilet as they are used to jumping onto the lid and then up on the sink for some fresh water or attention, one of those was a kitten and she nearly drowned, partly due to the shock. It started to smell in the house, which I find really discusting and annoying. The roommates bathroom is just juk since there are only male using it.... what do I do to convince them to keep the lid down and the door closed.......

This is one issue that divides the human race right down the middle. I had heard about bacteria mist. This leaves a big question mark on the hygiene of toiletries kept inside. Why bother trying to prove or disprove? Let us keep the lid closed. As you have pointed out, that is the purpose of lids!

You know....I never considered all of those reasons, likely because I don't leave any of my toiletries in the bathroom anyway.

I grew up with four brothers, so keeping my items out of the bathroom is still a part of how I am. BUT, there are the other items, towels, the sink, which is relatively close.

The only thing I wonder about is, if the toilet bowl begins to overflow, having the lid open while flushing allows you to see the water rising above the level it should be, and react quickly and shut the water off, before all of that crap (no pun...or pun intended...whichever) is all over the floor.

Now I don't know what to do!

I argue with my wife about the seat... well not argue, but discuss, and she often brings up the falling in thing. My counter point is if she doesn't put the seat up, then I just might sprinkle on the seat. Why should I have to put the seat down if she doesn't have to put it up?

Toilet water evaporates and can cause many health issues. Please put your lid down whenever you are not using the toilet. It only take one second to put it down and two seconds to put it up. This is the most important reason why the lid was invented.

My husband is pretty good about leaving the lid down after one accident a few years ago when our cat fell in the toilet. She liked to sit on the lid, but one time he forgot and left it up. We heard a splash and the cat started yowling. It was a little funny but not very hygiene.

Hi,BK, haven't seen you in awhile. This is not a problem for me but somewhere, some time, I remember sitting down in water and cracking my back. Must have been many years ago. They should make the seats that have to be held up to end that problem. It really could cause a serious problem, you know? Besides having to take a shower at 3 or 4 AM!

Oooh love your Ah -Ha - vocalcouch. And I have to admit that I just never gave this too much thought as far as that flush - ewww! Fortunately, I am into feng-shui and have just gone ahead and kept the lid down anyway. But now I am so aware of it to the point of being fanatical (darn it!).

Ah - Ha...so that's where all of my money has gone - right down the toilet. You made me a Feng Shui believer. Have a beautiful book on Feng Shui. Now - I shall read and practice it. This is one of my favorite hubs. I thought I knew everything about germs, toxins, etc. It just goes to show you, how little a person really knows. Did I say I love this hub? Thanks so much d.williams - glad you felt some love. I have been laughing all morning reading your comment. I am so aware of this toilet stuff now - and I never want to go into a public toilet. Yikes!

Nothing would surprise me about rats - they can scale the face of a building and go into windows. This was a common problem in the city years ago.

And I'll think of you thinking of me and thinking of toilets and rats. Yay!

I loved this hub. and i loved all the comments. And thanks for making me now paranoid about leaving that lid up. Things will never be the same. Every time i flush my toilet i will now think of you. (not sure if that was a compliment or not) LOL.

I saw a special on t.v. about rats, and how they are so agile and supple that they can make their way from the sewer to your toilet. And people have actually been bitten on their butts by rats coming up through the drainage system. That one kind of gave me pause as well as your article. So, now when i got to the B.Room, i will not only be thinking about rats, but you as well. (darn, that did not sound like a compliment either). LOL. No disrespect intended. I loved this hub. Good job. dw

Good info! I found out years ago that germs are exposed everytime the toilet is flushed and that was enough for me.

I loved the padded toilet seats back then too, Granny's House! Wasn't that the tops in luxury - to gently park yourself on such padding. Mmmmmm. And then they cracked - and the party was over - ow!

Arrrgh! You are so right Granny's House. I had one years ago and it did crack (which was painful to sit on) - but yes, they cannot possibly be sanitary.

Hmm, haven't seen any lately - maybe we've caught on to the filth issues.

Bk, you know what else is gross? Those plastic, foam filled toilet seats. Sometimes they crack and get urine in the cracks and then they stink. Yuck! I can not even sit on one of these, even if it is at someones house I know.
